The band “Pão com Manteiga,” hailing from São Paulo, was one of the highlights of Brazilian progressive rock and experimental music. Formed in 1976 by the talented musicians Paulo Som (Vocals, Viola, Guitar), Johnny (lead vocalist and guitarist), Pierre (Electric Bass and Backing Vocals), Gilberto (Keyboards and Banjo), and Edison (Drums and Effects), the band released their self-titled album in the same year.
The album, released on LP by Continental Records, is a conceptual work that transports the listener to the fantastical world of Avalon while also offering critiques of modern society. Its bold sound combined with impactful lyrics made the album a memorable auditory experience.
Despite four decades since their disbandment, the band “Pão com Manteiga” emerged from obscurity after being mentioned in the book “Lindo Sonho Delirante vol. 2 – 100 Audacious Brazilian Records (1976 – 1985)” by the renowned São Paulo music researcher Bento Araújo. In 2012, the album was featured in the list “7 Obscure Records of Brazilian Music” by Altnewspaper, cementing its place in Brazilian music history.
